Yoga Class Descriptions (all levels)

Basics

Basics classes cater to a new and developing yoga practice. Emphasis is placed on alignment and structure of physical postures, and breath/body connection is introduced. There is no 'flow' to sequence. Instead, more time is devoted to the muscle action and body positioning in each posture. Blocks and various props may be used as well to help students realize their safe potential in posture.

Foundational Flow

A 'Foundational Flow' class bridges the gap between Basics and Vinyasa. It is ideal for the student wishing to advance beyond the principles of a Basics class but is hesitant or unable to attend a led Vinyasa flow class. Students are introduced to the necessary link between breath and body movement through the practice of safe transitions and flowing postures. The pace is mindfully slow and practical, the room is comfortably warm, and both verbal cueing and appropriate physical adjustments make this class safe for all levels of practitioner.

Gentle

Gentle Yoga is geared toward a softer, gentler practice. Although the style is still vinyasa flow, the overall pace is slower, and the postures are not as physically demanding. Emphasis is placed on the breath/body movement connection through mindful, flowing sequences, and the softer practice is easy on both body and mind. The studio is kept at a comfortable and accessible room temperature. This class is of great benefit to anyone recovering from injury as well as athletes recovering from rigorous training workouts.

Restorative Yoga for Stress and Anxiety

Sometimes we just need a quiet space to unwind and heal. 'Relax and Restore' is the class that caters to the busy and distracted mind and body. 'Relax and Restore' uses gentle, restorative postures, aromatherapy (only therapeutic grade oils are used), guided imagery and deep relaxation techniques to help ease stressed minds and heal sore and overused bodies. This class is open to all levels and abilities, and a working knowledge of yoga is not needed to attend. All are welcome!

Slow Flow

Slow Flow is a mindful, slowly paced yoga class that incorporates conscious flowing of breath with movement of body. This class is appropriate for beginners as well as newer students, and it also can be a welcome change for students who like a fast-flowing, more intermediate-level class. Slow flow incorporates focused and gentle opening of the body and spine, foundational yoga poses and sun salutations, attention to detail on breath and alignment, and longer posture holds. Keen focus, concentration, control of breath, and mindfulness are all cultivated in a Slow Flow practice.

Vinyasa

'Vinyasa' is a flow-style class for intermediate to advanced practitioners who would like to challenge themselves on more than just the physical level. Challenging postures and sequences are opportunities for learning lessons beyond physical, such as concentration, mindfulness, and self-study through movement. While this class is not intended for beginners, modifications and alignment cues are taught. 

Yoga for Runners and Athletes

 Runners and athletes tend to shy away from yoga, believing either that it is 'just gentle stretching' or that they are not flexible enough to practice yoga. While yoga does offer a unique set of challenges to the runner/athlete body, it IS possible to cultivate a safe and beneficial yoga practice that can develop strength, balance, and flexibility in every body. This Yoga for Runners class avoids the common pitfalls and postures of a usual yoga class, some of which can actually decrease speed and endurance in athletes. Instead, this class emphasizes new strength and balance in feet, ankles, and knees, as well as focusing on hip strength and flexibility. By re-energizing the subtle muscles of the body, runners can avoid injury, regain body alignment, and increase overall performance. Time in each class is also set aside for breathing techniques to help oxygenate the body and brain.

Private Sessions

Private sessions offer some incredible benefits. These individual sessions allow a student to set aside personal time with a qualified instructor to focus on a wide array of issues unique to a student's body, mind, and situation. Personal instruction can help boost confidence, increase body awareness, and establish a meaningful connection between teacher and student. No matter if you are entirely new to yoga or have been practicing for years, private sessions can help deepen your yoga practice.
